LittleSorrow An Unfinished Saga Poem By Kienenberger (c) 1994 Done entirely in alternating end rhyme. Mother cane running through the door while my dolly and me were on the floor. Up in her arms she scoped me near holding me tight, close and dear. We held her tight my doley and me. We shared her love, joy and glee. When I looked up, her head was turned Yet something was wrong, I discerned. Tightly my hand grasped her arm. Her head turned, when she felt my alarm. There in her eyes I could see fear, it was then, the sound I began to hear. It was like a quiet and far, far away song I turned to mommy and asked what was wrong. She looked at me a tear in her eye, smiled weekly and began to cry. "Quiet, now dear" she said through her sorrow, and held me tight as if there were no tomorrow. She carried me down deep in our home, down the old stairs that creaked like a bone. A stale musty smell held the air, she bent down low, holding me with care. With the dim light I heard only her feet trod the earth, till she stopped near a small berth. From within she grabbed a small light. revealing a space jammed with old boxes stacked tight. The song grew louder, stronger and near, as momey moved the boxes till a small space was clear. There within she set me down upon that cold and solid ground. she look at me tears drying on her face "Listen to mommy my dear, stay in this place, till I come and get you, promise me now. Oh how I love you dear, oh how!" Momey's sad eyes looked deeply at me, I nodded to momey as being as strong as I could be. She gave me my dolley and told me to be brave, then her hand brushed my cheek with a wave. A thunderous sound came from above she kissed me on my forehead, a kiss filled with love. "Quiet now and don't come out." Those loving eyes looked at me, and then turned about. She shut the door, bracing it with a small stone. I heard the steps creek, then was all alone, with the timeless noise of the deep heavy song, that played in the dark with a thundering gong. My dolly and me huddled together in the dark. deep in the ground we felt the song's mark. Beneath us the earth began shaking. Within the hidden crates around us, sounds of breaking Dust fell from above My dolley held me as tight as a glove. We listened forever as the song came and went then sleep overcame us in that box like tent. Momey was calling me to her from far away but their was no light, there was no day. Darkness was everywhere and I could not go near it was all about, no place was clear. Then a pillar of flame caused the darkness to flee... I awoke, darkness still about me and my dolley awoke too. We sat watching the darkness waiting for momey to come through. Time passed, hunger came, my tumey began to roar yet still momey did not come open the door. "momey," I called, There was no answer overwhelmed by fear and hunger we wanted out of this canister out away from the darkness, into the light.. So we pushed through the door, the squeeze was real tight. Crawling out of the darkness we stumbled on something splintered blocks of wood and stone caused our knees to sting. We climbed up the broken stairs reaching the light, and what we saw was a real bad sight. Our house was a mess everything was broken, more or less. Half the house was missing and gone we could see out to our fire burnt lawn. We walked out side into the town it was the same all around. We noticed some people lying down, probably sleeping on the ground. When we got close I could see they were hurt real bad I touched them and they were cold, it made me sad. A flood of memories came back fast. They felt the same as my daddy did when I saw him last, laying in the box, he didn't move, Never. Momey said he had left us forever. For those laying there cold and motionless on the ground, the ones not moving, the ones that we found, sitting and looking at them as we nelt. we knew no bandages or kisses would help There was nothing for them that we could do. for that's what momey had said, so we knew. So my dolley and me moved on, Across many more torn and burnt lawns. Til we came to a building that didn't look as bad as all the other buildings had. We went through its crooked door frame and spied on the floor a candy cane. My dolley wasn't hungry so I ate it up. Afterwards I looked around some more and found a cup and various other things scattered round. So we started to build a castle like mound. Beginning with some shoes and books, and piled on some dishes towels and hooks. We needed something to make doors and towers. On a table was a vase, so we dumped out its flowers. It worked quite well as the castles center piece but it stilled need doors and a few more towers at least. Hunting around some more we found some square things and rolled bandages but put them down when we came upon some hard bread for sandwiches then water and other things to eat and drink. There were some chewy oatmeal bars in a jar near the sink. and rolled up meet roles in tin foil someone had just left them where they might have spoiled After eating our fill we didn't feel like playing any more so my dolley and me went out the door, back into that torn-up charred-away land we walked then crawled when we could no longer stand because of the loose dirt and debris. Suddenly we stumbled on something soft we didn't at first see, it was warm, yellow-orange and went around a wall We followed it and it became very big and tall. It looked like a lizard laying on its side. only it had wings and fish like hide. Its wings were not like a birds, but smooth, I touched it but it just lay there and didn't move. It felt warm as I patted its long neck It wasn't dead, maybe just tired or sick. Over its front leg I stumbled My dolley and me both fell and tumbled. We began to clime to our feet but stopped in a beet when we noticed its leg was cut realy bad. my dolley decided we should go back for those bandages we had momey had been a pro-fish-in-el nurse she showed me how she fixed bad owies, even the worse when she would play with me she would wrap my arm she said it would help keep it safe from harm. It took us a while to go there and back I had to drag everything I placed in the sack all by my self, my dolley wouldn't help. the way was so rocky once we fell with a yelp. we were ok, just my bum was hurt, I got up and brushed off the dirt. When we got back the lizard was still there. I cleaned and wrapped its leg, gently with care. I couldn't wrap it quite as good, ...as momey could, but she could fix it better when she came back. Grabbing more bandages out of the sack We walked around to see if any other owies needed fixing. One wing-arm-thing looked crooked and the wing was partly ripping. I bandaged and cleaned it where it looked like it was bleeding but the whole thing looked like it had taken an offal beating I straitened the wing as best as I could but it was hard to turn and was as stiff as wood Finally I got it where I could tape the tear but the scotch tape wouldn't stick very well anywhere. I finally kina got it to stick together By then it was getting dark and it felt like chilly weather My dolley and me had no where to go so we climbed under the other wing on the side that was low and snuggled up near the warm lizards side, right next to its soft fish like hide. There my dolley and me fell asleep right away. "Stay where you are" I heard her say "Stay until I come by." but I couldn't stay, I fell from the sky. "I'm sorry momey", I said as I hit the ground. The black engulfed me from all around. I awoke quite startled, my dolly was sleeping still I felt stiff all over and a little ill my arm and back was hurting a bit I went to my dolley and found a place to sit as I sat there all the ills and pains went away So I woke my dolley and we crawled out to a dawn of a new day. The big lizard was still there It still wasn't looking all that fair. Its bandage on its leg had came off in the night We cleaned and wrapped it again real tight. Then me and dolly went and sat down by its big head I patted its neck gently and said "you'll get better, just wait and see.." Later that day when we played in the debris We were working on the path to a garden but needed something to get the ground to unharden we went to get a stick from a near by tree When we got there I was very thirsty So instead we went to get some water from my sack While drinking I herd a noise at my back from the lizard came a low sounding moan It was very quiet but deep in tone. I turned around towards where its head lay Its mouth was hanging partly open with its tong out all the way I could see its breath form upon its tong through its big teeth its tong was very dry looking as it lay upon the dirt beneath It continued its moaning with eyes still closed It looked so thirsty with its face in that pose. To its mouth I walked with water in tow As I neared it opened one of its eyes real slow. Its moaning tone ceased to be sung I tilted the jug, water spilled on to its tong which disappeared lapping the water in until the stream from the bottle began to thin. It seem to relax closing its eyes and fell right to sleep to my surprise. My dolley and me were getting tired too, it moved around that dark, the black it clouded from all sides and bit me on the back tearing and clawing at my arm it bit my leg to my alarm Next verses working notes: the darkness bit & claw at my shoulder, back and leg momey momey where are you, I don't want to stay here my family left me all alone something warm under my wing oh it my dolley she'll stay by me till momey comes - doley under wing. warm. At some point, girl goes back to the house, caves in, call for momey, dragon comes. Authors comments: In the current abrupt end to the story you just read and working notes, the dragon and girl have fallen asleep and are sharing a dream/nightmare. Each of them are mixing elements from their perceptions into the same dream. It's the first communication between the girl and dragon. I had plan's to come back to this project but eleven years have gone by and I haven't touched it. I had the story line of the poem all laid out in my head, but I'm sure I've forgotten most of it now. From what I remember. This poem takes place in modern times. This poem was about a little girl who was hidden by her mom when appear dragons began attacking the countryside. She managed to hide her girl in the cellar before the attack on their city. The little girl comes out from her hiding place and finds the city devastated by the attack. The dragons have moved on. However one was injured, still alive and left behind in the attack. The little girl finds the injured dragon. The dragon and the girl form an unusual bond, and learn to communicate with each other and the story continues. At this point, the dragon and girl where going to head off to find the other dragons, (this is the part I where forget details of the story) the dragons motive may have been vengeance for being left behind and the girls motive to find her mom. I'm not sure what I had planned beyond that. I think I was going towards having the dragon and girl find that there was miss interpretation of motives between humans and dragon, since there had been no communications between the to species, neither side understands the other and why the conflict is going on. And of course some resolution biased off that premise, and the communication the girl and dragon have formed. This story/poem is written from the little girls point of view, her perception on what is happening is not always interpreted correctly by her, it is both her innocents and hatching like similarities (from the dragons perspective) that bond the two together. Will I finish this? Likely not anytime soon. So I present what I have done so far. No sense in it being tucked away and totally forgotten. - EP
