Alt.fan.dragons started off as a Usenet news group that was created in December of 1993 by ExistingPhantom. It quickly grew and expanded over to a variety of internet media which includes the web, IRC, muds, forums and blogs. Its a comunity of indiviguals that have a kinship and love of dragons. You can think of it as an assorted meeting ground on the internet where dragon lovers can get together and share their likes and interests.

Back in the early days of USENET you had to create a RFD (Request For Discussion) and post it for review to create a newsgroup. After 30 days if there was no objection the newsgroup could be created. Here is the original RFD for the ALT.FAN.DRAGONS news group. This is the document that started it all.

Usenet news is basically a huge bulletin board. There are thousands of subjects you
can select from. Alt.fan.dragons got its start in usenet news.
When you get into a news group you can read what is currently being discussed through
the messages that have been left there by others. Once someone places or posts a
message to a news group it stays there for three days to a week before it disappears.
Due to the way the news system works, not everyone sees the same posts in the same
order, nor even the same posts on the same day.
